Wintering Southwards

Postby MarieCB » Sat Aug 02, 2014 1:49 pm

We have been wintering in Southland and Otago, two of our favourite places.
We have Enjoyed some snow at Henry Creek on the Milford Road and again at Piano Flat.
We are now biking the Otago Central Rail Trail which, at this time of year, we have all to ourselves!
Its truly beautiful in the Maniototo. We find a comfy grassy bank on our rest stops and there is just us, the silence, amazing views and the big sky - with an occasional Skylark singing above us - magic. Great sunshine weather too. By the sounds of bird song, they seem to think its Spring already!
However as we move closer to the Middlemarch end it looks like we will meet some rain at last.

You're braver than us Marie although I would love to "do" one real snow winter, Mr FKG is not in the least bit interested. We've managed to avoid all of the wet weather & storms and here at Kaiteriteri we had 7 straight days of heavy frosts and calm blue skies. It has just started to rain today.

Hmm, yes, thanks for making us upright!! Just loving this trail at this time of year, we haven't met any other cyclists as yet!! Our weather has been great too. We are now nearing the end - Middlemarch in a couple of days. Our rest stops each day are accompanied by so much birdsong - spring is surely on its way.
