The Nevis Crossing and the Thomson Gorge Track

Postby Roamnz » Wed Oct 21, 2015 9:55 am

This may be of interest to any one contemplating travelling through the Thomson Gorge track and the Nevis Crossing in the near future.

Friends travelling in a 2009 Traillite - a 7m cabover on a Mitsubishi Canter, have in the last two weeks completed both.

Thomson Gorge Track:
The track travelling Omakau to Bendigo, they found this the worst they have experienced it, with extremely bad corrugations deeply rutted out from recent rains. The ford crossings were manageable as long as they took their time. The high winds added to the drama as well.

The Nevis Crossing:
They spent five days going through the Nevis from Bannockburn to Garston, a wonderful trip this time around. They were able to traverse all the water crossings with out any hassles, Commissioners Creek for instance was easy to navigate if you took your time. Road repairs have been carried out in recent times and although the track was lumpy in places it was far better than the Thomson Gorge road.

They travelled with several other vehicles for safety. This same couple took their Traillite through the Rainbow Rd several years ago and have had a lot of South Island track experience. As always with these locations they sent a reminder to always have an updated weather forecast, heed wind warnings and don't attempt the Nevis all the way through from Bannockburn to Garston if heavy rain is forecast.

Thomsons must have really cut up bad over the last of winter, it was a doodle in early August. The best 'off-road' track by far we've travelled in the South Island.

Yes Shellie that is what Jim and Judith mentioned, it is the worst they have seen it, sounds like the grader hasn't been through there for a while. It was good when we took Roamnz through there several years ago, but all it takes is a month of heavy rain and and no maintenance for the surface to change.

I actually thought that when you mentioned taking the motorhome through awhile ago, there would be no way I'd encourage people driving through in a motorhome the day we did it either. It must have deteriorated alot since your trip although as I said it was fine for smaller vehicles when we did it in August.
