100 more grey hairs......

Postby Rosemary&Peter » Sat May 09, 2015 9:17 pm

Driving back from Te Awamutu today (our Bus is our only vehicle, so she doubles as a shopping trolley), I glanced down and to my horror saw that the "T-BELT" orange warning light had come on. :o

Many years ago I had a Cortina which had a sudden timing belt failure....not at all pleasant....so I kinda thought the worst.

Calmness prevailed, and with all systems appearing perfect we carried on towards home....or somewhere where a mechanic could be consulted....late on a Saturday pm.

And Lo! There on the outskirts of Ngahinepouri was ye olde Krippners Garage...roller doors all open and a blue overalled saviour doing his thing.... :)

The Oracle reassured me that the end was unlikely to be nigh....that the T-BELT was on a timing switch that clicked the light on when 90,000 ks had rolled by. Get it replaced...but no need to panic. (panic? Who was panicikng?)

Went back and checked the odo...and bless me...my old Girl had just racked up her first 200,000 kms.

Guess what she gets to mark the occasion?

Hard case Rosemary :) . Have you had the bus for the previous 100,000 km? The light probably comes on at each of those anniversaries, so you may well be on your second timing belt already.

Cheers

Generally speaking, orange lights are not that serious, merely an indication that something needs attention but not rfn.

Red warning lights however indicate something affecting safety, oil pressure, low brake fluid, .

Duct tape is like "the Force", it has a dark side, it has a light side and it holds the universe together. nothing screams poor workmanship more than wrinkles in Duct tape.

I have replaced far to many cam belts that by Km's were not due, But were about to let go anyway to trust just waiting for a warning light.

There are Km distances for replacing cam belts which are "usually" adhered to!!!!!
But, there can also be a time limit of years as well. Most forget that the belt will degrade over time, let alone the oil seals and belt bearings. If in doubt about the age, change it to be safe. Often the cheapest way.
It was also one easy way to discover if your speedo had been wound back as the light could come on at a time not relevant to the speedo.

We bought the Bus ex Japan from Pokeno....fairly sure no winding back as the odo was on about 120,000 kms....
wear typical for that amount of ks.

We have been religious about having the routine services done...I assume they would be checking for oil leaks? (It was a post prang oil leak that caused my old Cortina's t belt failure)

We do get an orange oil can light come on occasionally...when parked on an angle, or on a steep hill.

We have done some steep, long hill climbs where the orange oil light will come on briefly on the downhill run...I used to pull over and check the oil level...but not finding the level low (even when on the flat) I assume it is just a peculiarity of my old girl's engine.

DAMS will be getting a call first thing. :D

It is not about winding back speedo's, But more the time sitting in traffic & just leaving the motor running to keep the heater warm.
