SH1 DESERT ROAD - SCHEDULED ROAD CLOSURE

The first of two 36-hour closures of SH1 Desert Road will start on Wednesday, 7 March at 7am through to Thursday 8 March at 7pm. This is needed for a concrete deck pour on the Waihohonu Stream bridge. The detour route around SH46, 47, 4 and 49 and is not suitable for all larger trucks.

The bridge was damaged by a truck rollover last winter and has been down to a single-lane under stop/go control since repair work started last month. A second 36-hour closure is planned for April 4 with the work to be completed later in April.

Came back from Wellington yesterday, decided to go via Ohakune - Turangi. A much more pleasant drive than the Desert Road, a lot less stress and only a bit longer in time. (I am not in a hurry!) :)

The State Highway 1 Desert Road closure which was scheduled for today has been rescheduled for Monday 26 March.

The road will be closed to enable the concrete deck to be poured on the Waihohonu Stream Bridge. The bridge was damaged in a crash last year.

NZTA Waikato Transport Systems Manager, Karen Boyt, says the closure of the Desert Road was postponed after a problem with the scaffolding was spotted during the final health and safety check.

SH1 DESERT ROAD - SCHEDULED CLOSURE

The Desert Road will be CLOSED for 36 hours on Monday 26 March.

The road will be closed to enable a concrete deck to be poured on the Waihohonu Stream Bridge. The bridge was damaged in a crash last year.

The closure will run from 7:00am Monday 26 March until 7:00pm Tuesday 27 March.

NZTA Waikato Transport Systems Manager, Karen Boyt, says road users should ensure they check the NZTA website or call us because the closure will still be weather permitting.

“We understand the closure of the Desert Road has a major impact on people and business and we’d like to apologise in advance for the disruption this work will cause.

“People should avoid travelling if they can or expect delays on the detour route. Our website and social media will be updated so keep an eye on those, or call us on 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49) so you’re aware of what’s ahead of you,” Ms Boyt says.

Earlier dates have been postponed due to bad weather. Pouring concrete in wet weather can have environmental and safety impacts.

The alternative route is State Highways 46, 47, 4, and 49. This detour is not suitable for vehicles over 46 tonnes, apart from 50MAX which is permitted.

Thank you for your patience. We will update social media with all new major developments. ^RS
