Gunnera is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants. Some species have extremely large leaves. Species in the genus are variously native to Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, Papuasia, Hawaii, insular Southeast Asia, Africa, and Madagasca

Her response...
“the plant is of the Gunnera family... not sure that it would grow in a cold climate well and it likes fairly swampy soil. We don't sell them here and I'm not sure but I think they're classed as a weed in NZ.”

Thx Smillie.. It's actually growing in the garden of one of our local industrial businesses.. The owner uses the building to restore his small collection of cars and machines.. :o

Agree with the "Cold climate" bit as ours has just wilted at the 1st cool southerly here. No probs as it usually takes off again in spring.
