Compared to other tourists, visitors travelling by campervan tend to travel more widely, stay longer and spend money on a wider range of goods and activities.
Domestic and international tourists travelling the country by campervan spend $500 million per year and an average of $200 per night.
A total of 138,124 adults travelled in campervans in 2011 – 21,347 of these were New Zealanders and 116,776 international visitors.

Mark, those figures are taken from a report by Jenny Coker of Covec, Understanding the impact of campervan tourism on NZ.
Does not appear to count Kiwis touring in their own vans.

Hi John
I put that quote there just so I could find it again if needed.
I read those comments about the figures not including domestic, but the words from the Wellington report, if true, seem at odds with that.

If 21,347 New Zealanders travelled in campervans in 2011, and the NZMCA membership was about 40,000 (guessing), then either only about half of NZMCA members used their campervans in 2011, or the figures do not include Kiwi's travelling in their own vans, or the Report is just incorrect.

Cheers, Dene

I would suspect that they are figures derived from rental information. The first real survey of travel patterns by NZMCA was probably not available for that survey and even that would be a guess based only on those who responded, not concrete information.

On any given weekend, it sometimes seems that there are at least that number of people in private motorhomes on the roads in the Bay of Plenty alone. :-|

Yes Neil

I was up in the Bay of Plenty at Matata over the weekend and there would have been around 12 / 15 at Matata I counted 15 at Pikowai and around the same at the POP at Otamarakau.

The report is a free download, available from covec nz, as Neil says, it is derived from rental info and excludes the RWC figures.
It makes good reading, breaks down the regions visited, Chch the highest and also the spends, nights etc.
