We are coming to New Zealand this month, we have found free open source maps for our Garmin sat nav from a member on this site.

After an afternoon trying to load this free map onto a system we have purchased, I eventually contacted Garmin to ask how to install these maps?
They directed me to there site so I could purchase the map!
I email back that the map was FREE, and we just required the information of how to load it on the sat nav.

I have been informed by them that as I do not want to purchase from them, they will not help.!!!
So can anyone shed some light on how we all can access free maps, then install them on devices we have purchased?

To get new maps or update your old ones go to
Download the latest version to your desktop. (eg
Right click on the downloaded file and unzip it by clicking on "Extract All"
This will give you a folder called (in this example) 20150925_gmapsupp
Inside this folder is an IMG file called gmapsupp
Connect GPS to computer USB and set GPS to "USB Mass Storage". (Data Mode)
Drag this gmapsup.img file to the "Garmin" folder in your GPS.
(Delete any old gmapsup files that you do not want)

You can load multiple mapsets onto your Garmin GPS. For example, it is possible to load and be able to select from :-
Free NZopen GPS road maps and
Free NZopen GPS Topographical maps and
Garmin NZ maps and
Maps of other countries.
