"Strength of Water" - we missed it at the theatres, then saw that it was showing in Arrowtown at 2pm on Tuesday. So we drove there from Cromwell to see it. It was in their smaller 15-seat theatre and we were the only ones there so got the two-seater sofa in the back row
The movie was well worth the trip to see it. It is based and filmed in the Hokianga. It is very much of the 'dark brooding little NZ film' genre. There are a couple of unknown child actors in the lead roles as twins and they are wonderful. The Hokianga is at the opposite end of the country to Arrowtown, geographically and culturally. Northland generally and the Hokianga specifically provided me with my first culture-shock feelings in my own country. This film provides a view into the lives of people in those places that I suspect is typical of many.
It is one of those movies that you experience rather than watch, and one which stays with you for a time afterwards.
