However, the complexity and durability of any automated system to cope with the tough environment on the roof of an RV makes this option not realistic. Much cheaper option to put as much solar as will fit.

180W or 80W?
A 180W panel and a 6A MPPT controller would not be a logical combination for a 12V setup.

Any quality honestly rated horizontally mounted panel is capable of 100% output for an hour or two on mid summer days in full sunshine and a low SOC battery. With a 180W panel that could often exceed 14A with an appropriate controller.
