Come to think of it Peter you are right & it would be better than some of those finger amputating contraptions I have encountered

Suggest you do a cardboard template to get measurements correct for your cabinet top.

For the top use a heavy particle board type board, ours is laminated and has lasted nearly 30 years but a solid wood type would be nice and about the same weight...it easy to use... just lift and pull forward in one movement..Easy AS..
