Hey guys, I have been following this thread with great interest… cheers for sharing.

I’m not all that clued up on the solar as we had someone do all the installation work for us…. Just curious tho, I heard that it is not the cost of a solar panel & they do vary in dollars for the same wattage… but it is the amps that you actually get from your solar.

We found out from a fellow at the recent Kaikoura rally… our batteries were not individually wired to the (I think he said to the) controller, so our solar was only running at 75% efficiency supplying the batteries.
We have 3x90w solar (new) & 1x75w solar (came with motorhome) on calculation we should get around 21-22amps tops when charging, in summer we never got over 13-14 amps.

We are currently in Amberley, just north of Christchurch… thanks to the person who shared this area in “places to go” we get up to 7amps… average 5.5amps for about 4-5hrs in the blue skies….
Lots to learn for us to get better efficiency

Cheers
Rudy

Our new power system is now installed, 4 x 120 solar panels, 2 x 260ah batteries, a Votronic MPPT controller all supplied by Pierre at AA Solar plus a second Even charger to cope with the bigger batteries. System was all up and running at 4.00pm yesterday. By 4.00pm today the batteries were full and the truck had not been near a 240 power source. It was fairly sunny in Auckland today with minimum cloud cover. I am very happy with that result, will post again when we have been using the system for few weeks. The original 2 year old 110ah house batteries have now become our Isuzu truck batteries and our truck batteries have gone to a good home. Grant

Hi All

Finally we are up and running.I settled for a 120w panel and an mppt controller with a remote meter. Had it going yesterday for the first time.In Wellingtons fickle weather it had the 130ah battery topped up in about 3hrs. The battery was at 12.2v when we connected the system up and i saw 9 amps going to the battery from the mppt.
The family reckon i will spend my days watching the meter trying to break the input record!!!!!
Little do they know that my next little project is to try the strip led lighting setup..
Just want to thank all who contributed to the thread and i hope others who were interested in it gleaned as much information as i did.
regards John

Yeah, you will ...... It's hard to leave alone. After three months I'm starting to try to ignore it for hours at a time :D Sometimes I am satisfied by just listening to the noise of the fan in the MPPT controller - which only cuts in when it is working hard. It is music if you ask me ... :D

And to think that not to long ago all we had if we were lucky was a voltmeter and an ammeter :D
